An EAN Charitable Trust? A national charity with a national board |
In our introduction this month, we mention that even before the launch of EAN, some 10 years ago, we had visions for certain aspects of the Network that have yet to come to fruition. An EAN charity is one such vision. A charitable arm of EAN that could exist separate to it whilst benefiting from the support of EAN members.
Our vison is this:
EAs and PAs are doers. Give you a job and it gets done. That's one of your greatest strengths. And this is one of the reasons we see an EAN Charity working so well. Because where else in Australia can you find 5,300 prolific doers all in one group who have great vison and ideas and love organising things! But by the same token, we also know that empowerment and autonomy are essential components to encouraging involvement and participation and also experience and growth. So for this reason, we'd like to make it your charity - not ours. And that doesn't mean we won't be involved, provide guidance and help as needed, but we don't want to be in charge and control of it. We want this to be something for members run by members. Something that achieves good things every year and that you can be proud of.
Establishing a charity is something we have very little knowledge of. So we will be looking for advice and guidance on this. Recruiting the right people to our national board will be an essential component of this, as will it be for the state boards, but another important component will be seeking expert advice. As a consequence, ahead of even getting to that stage, if any of our members have existing experience in working on the establishment of a charity, or if you work with executives that have this experience and might donate a small amount of their time to provide some simple guidance and advice, then please do let us know - email jonathan@execuitveassistant.com
When discussing this idea with members over the years, one of the main suggestions that has been put forward is an annual EAN Charity Ball. Can you imagine one of these occurring in every major capital in Australia each year? We can, and we think they could be enormously successful. And we've already been given lots of advice from members on how best to make it work. From securing tickets sales to ideas for silent auctions and even getting venues and other partners involved, we've heard loads of amazing ideas that would make such events really viable and lots of fun. But that's not all we could encourage. From walks, to bike rides to quiz nights to dancethons - the number of potential opportunities is endless. About as endless as the number of amazing ideas we know 5,300 EAs and PAs can come up with and then make a reality.
As mentioned, we don't want to have day to day management control of the Charity, but that doesn't mean we won't be helping out. And in addition to that, we want to look at ways that both EAN and Elite Assistants can do their bit to give back to the community and do our bit for charity as part of new Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. We will keep you posted with our final decision regarding this and exactly how we see we will be able to contribute to the charity.
Deciding on what charitable organisations to provide support to has actually always been one of the most contentious issues we have faced when discussing this notion. We have those members that have proposed we should only support women's charities because of the demographic of our members. And yet, we do have male members and, with those numbers growing all the time, perhaps that would be unfair, so we may need to rethink that strategy. But we also have some other ideas we know members might like to consider. We often hear members talk about wanting to actually donate their time to charities or get involved in some overseas projects or activities during their vacation time. So perhaps we should also consider supporting charities where not only could we help support them financially, but where we could create programs for members to actually get involved with helping them as volunteers, be that in Australia or even overseas. These issues will need to be resolved in the coming months as we head towards establishing the charity, so what we are proposing is that we first get your feedback by means of a national survey that we conduct over the next few months.
Conducting a survey will be the first stage. From there we will look to firstly take expressions of interest and then conduct interviews for our national board. And from there we will conduct a similar exercise in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra. None of this will happen overnight, but we want to start the work now. And we want your feedback now. We will start on the survey soon but even that will need some input and guidance. So please, if you think this sounds like a great idea start sending us your feedback and input. Please any comments to jonathan@execuitveassistant.com
