1. Virgin has unveiled the latest technology to make the life of a traveller easier, the world’s first pop-up check-in service. According to the airline, the service aims to “provide guests with the convenience of seat and baggage check-in away from the airport at locations such as cruise ports, conference venues and hotels” in an effort to “relieve congestion at major Australian airports”.
2. The world’s first 24-hour interactive guest room assistant purpose-built for the hotel environment is coming to Sydney. Providing 24-hour services to hotel guests and staff, the interactive device is able to respond to requests directly via simple voice commands or through its high-resolution interactive touchscreen.
3. Brisbane set to welcome two new TFE Hotels. Brisbane will welcome a new Adina Apartment Hotel in July and The Calile Hotel in September this year.
4. Hilton Sydney has unveiled a $1.5m kitchen refurbishment of renowned chef and restaurateur Luke Mangan’s Glass Brasserie restaurant.
5. The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has officially reopened its Roundhouse venue after extensive refurbishments. After stripping out and completely refitting its interior, the venue reopens with a selection of additional function spaces, as well as a new main entrance giving easy access to the Light Rail Line on Anzac Parade, which is due for completion in 2019.
6. Stylish Sydney hotel Ovolo Woolloomooloo has announced a partnership with renowned US restaurateur Matthew Kenney to bring his plant-based food concept to Australia.
7. Contained Sydney has popped up on Cockatoo Island until the end of June. With a restaurant by Don Tapa, a bar by Young Henry’s, Sydney Urban Winery and Archie Rose Distillery, an urban farm and a boutique hotel complete with a pool, Contained Sydney is an unusual space for events, casual dining and overnight stays in converted shipping containers.
8. Sydney’s first Ramada hotel is now open, with the Ramada Hotel and Suites Sydney Cabramatta replacing the Ibis Styles Sydney Lansvale.
9. TFE Hotels has announced the takeover of the 128-room apartment-style Aria Hotel Canberra, which will be unveiled as an Adina hotel next month.
10. Novotel Sydney Darling Square – formerly the Novotel Rockford Darling Harbour – has undergone an extensive refurbishment across each of its 230 guest rooms.
