With each sip of a Nespresso Pure Origin Grand Cru, you will almost be transported to the origin itself

Australians are becoming increasingly interested in the provenance of our food products. As a quality coffee-loving nation, this is particularly true when it comes to the coffee we drink. People buy a story, not just a product, and as a result, consumers are increasingly purchasing coffee with a single origin story they know and trust. To cater to the rising demand for single origin coffee and give customers with the opportunity to explore the finest quality coffee from across the globe, Nespresso offers its Pure Origin range.

At Nespresso, a Pure Origin Grand Cru is a coffee that is exclusively sourced from a single country of origin. Within the Professional Pure Origin Range, are three unmissable varieties - Ristretto Origin India, Espresso Origin Brazil and Lungo Origin Guatemala – carefully selected by Nespresso’s Coffee Experts to create a taste that is best suited to the individual, at the highest quality. The names selected for this range showcase the country from which the beans are sourced and details how the coffee should be extracted. For example, Ristretto Origin India should be extracted as a Ristretto and originates solely from India. The beauty of this range is that it truly encapsulates the aromatic flavours and notes that are unique to a single region.
Be transported to South India, around 1,400 metres above sea level. It is here that Nespresso’s Ristretto Origin India grows along the shady West Coast, in amongst a variety of spice trees – like pepper, clove and nutmeg – that help to provide biodiversity to the soil and enhance the coffee beans’ aromatic profile. The result is an intense and full-bodied coffee with a powerful character, produced from the finest Arabica and Robusta beans, with notes of spice.

In contrast, Nespresso’s Espresso Origin Brazil Grand Cru is created using two specialty varieties of pure Arabica beans from Brazil. The Red and Yellow Bourbon Arabica bean grows within a stunning sun-drenched flat plain region of Brazil, at a moderate altitude. This bean is harvested by hand and sundried with some of the beans’ fruit still intact, creating a compelling sweetness and aromatic richness. The beans are then combined with unwashed Cerrado Arabica beans, which provide distinctive cereal toasted notes to the Grand Cru.

Finally, Nespresso’s Lungo Origin Guatemala is cultivated amongst mountainous slopes of volcanic soil. It grows at the highest altitude of the three origins - 1,900 metres above sea level. A very rare method is used to harvest these beans – a washed process. Within the coffee industry, this method is usually avoided as it removes the sweetness of the coffee. However, Nespresso discovered that by applying a washed process to the Robusta beans used to create Lungo Origin Guatemala, it brings out new aromatic profiles of the coffee: dry, malty cereal notes and a bold character. The Robusta beans are then combined with Arabicas grown within the same environment, producing a sweet and incredibly smooth addition to the cup.
What’s significant to acknowledge when talking about these Pure Origin Grands Crus is that without Nespresso’s AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, these coffees would not exist. The program was originally implemented within these areas and many others in 2003. Having a holistic program that focuses on ensuring environmental sustainability and protecting the welfare of our farmer and their workers is important to us. And, to see the results signified in a physical product, like these Grands Crus, Nespresso has the opportunity to share a piece of its coffee origin story with you.
So, the next time you sip upon your favourite Pure Origin Grand Cru, take the time to savour the flavours and transport yourself on a journey from bean to cup – appreciating its uniqueness and evocative spirit.
